The Sand Ceremony is a beautiful and superior alternative to the Unity Candle, especially if the wedding is held out-of doors as the candles usually do not stay lit. It is powerful because symbology and imagery are far more effective in dramatizing the joining of your lives together before guests than just words and concepts.

All you need are three containers, two filled with different color sand that will represent the bride and groom, and a third in which the two colors of sand will be poured into, which represents the blending of the couple’s hearts and lives. You may wish to leave a small amount of sand in each container to symbolize that although you are now joined as one, you each remain individuals.

Following the exchanges of the vows and the rings, the bride and groom join their respective vases of sand crystals to a common vase.  This implies - once joined, never separated.  Photographers can capture exceptional photos of the blending of these sand crystals by the bride and groom.

We have also adapted this ceremony to include children from previous relationships. Each child has a container of different color sand and they blend their sand with their parents to symbolize the blending of a new family.

Michael's, other hobby and craft shps, and dollar stores usually have all of the sand and vases that you will need. We can advise you on the different approaches to integrating this into your ceremony.
